PHIL 374 - Adv World Phil and Religion Travel 2 credit(s) Travel course to Nepal (or alternate location) in which students will thoughtfully and creatively deploy various theories of religion in relation to philosophy and religion as they take shape within a specific contemporary geographical and cultural context. Cultural immersion is the focus. Course will include homestays, basic language acquisition, and guest lectures and site visits relevant to living practices of philosophy and religion and their complex histories. When the destination is Nepal, student engagement with contemporary philosophy may include engagement with the theory and practice of Vedic astrology, ayurvedic medicine, and Buddhist cosmology in Nepal. Critical reflection on various theories of religion in relation to contemporary religious practices may involve visits to the Dakshinkali shrine of the fierce Hindu goddess Kali and overnight stays at the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Namobuddha.
