Introduction
The Bachelor of Music Education (BME) with teaching licensure is a four and half- to five-year undergraduate program designed for students who are interested in teaching music in Pre-K through 12th grade music learning settings. This is a professional degree that culminates in a semester of supervised student teaching. The program provides students with a comprehensive preparation in music and education. Courses in music include music performance, music theory and history, conducting, piano proficiency, instrumental techniques, method courses, and teaching laboratories. Courses in education include educational psychology, technology in education, classroom management, and field experience.
Upon completion of the requirements for the BME with Teaching Licensure degree, students will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, professional dispositions and cultural competencies necessary to promote the academic, social, and personal development of students in various Pre-K through 12th grade music learning settings. The Pacific University Department of Music recommends students to Pacific University for conferral of the Bachelor of Music Education degree and the Pacific University College of Education recommends successful degree candidates to the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) for teaching licensure.

Core Courses
* Students must pass the Piano Proficiency Test. MUS 185 and MUS 186 may be waived for students who pass the Piano Proficiency Test without enrolling in these courses.
Ensembles: 0-8 Credits
Large ensemble appropriate to the student’s instrument or voice each semester in residency; may be taken for 0 or 1 credit.
Applied Music: 8 credits
Private instruction with a Pacific university instructor for 8 semesters.
Courses from the College of Education
Students must be admitted to the School of Learning and Teaching in the College of Education to complete licensure requirements. Students should apply to be admitted by the end of the sophomore year.
Program Details
Program Length
Four years for a complete BA degree. Two years for students transferring in with an AAOT degree. Program length may vary depending upon the student’s course load and academic progress.
Program Learning Outcomes
Specific student learning outcomes for the BME with Teaching Licensure are organized in three broad and interrelated areas:
Music Competencies
- Students will perform at a high level of proficiency on their primary instrument or in their primary voice type.
- Students will play all other musical instruments traditionally taught in Pre-K through 12th grade music education settings at the intermediate level and demonstrate intermediate singing skills.
- Students will demonstrate intermediate piano skills and an advanced level of aural discrimination and sight-reading skills.
- Students will demonstrate competent conducting skills and a knowledge of scoring for voice, band, and orchestra, as well as arranging music for the needs of their ensembles.
Teaching Competencies
- Students will demonstrate a proficiency in content knowledge including a knowledge of music history, theory, world music, and music technology.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in general pedagogical knowledge including unit and lesson planning, assessment techniques, classroom management, and effective rehearsal techniques.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in curriculum knowledge including knowledge of methods and materials and music repertoire applicable for teaching music in various music education settings.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in pedagogical-content knowledge on the instruments and voice types of their specialty and will demonstrate functional proficiency in pedagogical-content knowledge on all other instruments and voice types traditionally taught in Pre-K through 12th grade music education settings.
- Students will demonstrate a proficiency in knowledge of learners including a knowledge and understanding of teaching methods that meet differentiated learning styles.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in knowledge of educational contexts including Pre-K through 5th grade general music classes and various ensembles up through 12th grade.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge of educational aims, purposes, and values including national/state standards for music.
Professional Competencies
- Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed for active involvement in professional associations such as NAfME, and its state chapters.
- Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed for effective advocacy for music in schools.
- Students will demonstrate professional behaviors by practicing professional ethics, appearances, and relationships with the school and community.
