Teaching and English Language Learning, BEd

Introduction


The Bachelor of Education in Teaching and English Language Learning program prepares teacher candidates to be teacher leaders and advocates. Each semester includes school-based teaching experiences, individual mentoring, and integration of coursework. Upon completion the Bachelor of Education in Teaching and English Language Learning, teacher candidates will be prepared for Oregon Preliminary Oregon teacher licensure with the Elementary Multiple Subjects endorsement, or Single Subjects endorsements including Advanced Mathematics, Biology, Integrated Science, English/Language Arts, and Social Sciences; other single subjects available with approval. English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsements and Foundational (Middle grade) endorsements may be added to either an Elementary Multiple Subjects or a single subject endorsement.

This program is available in Woodburn and Eugene and will be piloted in Forest Grove during 2018-19.

Admission


This program is designed so that students must transfer in 67 semester credits (100 quarter credits) prior to completion. Prior to matriculation, students must have completed an AAOT degree OR at least 75% of the Core Coursework listed below.

Prerequisite Coursework:

67 semester/100 quarter credits.  This includes the minimum requirements listed below plus electives, to equal at least 67 semester/100 quarter credits.

Writing (4 semester/6 quarter credits minimum): Must include one English Composition course

Humanities (10 semester/15 quarter credits minimum): Humanities, Communication, Philosophy, English, Literature, Art, Music, Theater, Religion, Music Performance. Must include at least one English or Humanities course; one Communication or Speech course; and one Philosophy course.

Social Science (6 semester/10 quarter credits minimum): History, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Geography, Human Development and Family Studies. Must include one Psychology or Human Development and Family Studies course.

Mathematics (6 semester/10 quarter credits minimum)

Natural Science (6 semester/10 quarter credits minimum): Must include one lab course.

Education or Early Childhood Education (4 semester/6 quarter credits minimum): Must include an Introduction to Education course.

Single Subject Specialization Requirements

For those pursuing an endorsement to teach high school and middle school Advanced Mathematics, Biology, English Language Arts, Integrated Science, or Social Science, the following also are required. Coursework can be taken prior to or concurrent with matriculation in the B.Ed. program. Specific courses for the content specialization will vary according to community college course titles and numbers. All transfer students pursuing one of the above endorsements must design academic plans approved by a B.Ed. advisor prior to admission to Pacific University.

Select one plan based on the single subject endorsement sought (may use core courses to satisfy). All are quarter credits.

  • Mathematics: 48 approved credits in mathematics courses at the college algebra level or above
  • Biology: 27 approved credits in Biology, plus 16 additional approved credits in Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, or Earth Science
  • Integrated Science: 16 approved credits in Earth and Space Science, 16 credits in Life Sciences, 16 approved credits in Physical Sciences
  • English: 36 approved credits in English plus 8 approved credits in Writing
  • Social Science: 12 approved credits World History, 12 credits US History, 8 approved credits Geography and Culture, 8 approved credits Government

Degree Requirements


To earn the Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Teaching and English Language Learning, students complete 53 credits at Pacific University. In addition, they must have earned 67 semester credits (100 quarter credits) of transferrable work.  Transferrable work must include either an AAOT degree OR the Core Requirements detailed in the Admission section, above.  Foreign Language Proficiency also is required, as detailed below.

Specialization Coursework


Foreign Language Proficiency


All students must demonstrate competency in a language other than English, by passing a course equivalent to a 102-level Pacific language course, passing a Pacific University or community college challenge exam reflecting that same level of proficiency, or providing sufficient documentation of language competency (e.g., letter from clinical practicum site, video documentation of teaching in language). The Foreign Language requirement may be waived for native or heritage speakers of other languages at the recommendation of the Dean of the College of Education and in consultation with Pacific University’s World Language Department.

Policies


Undergraduate students in the College of Education are held to the policies listed in the Forest Grove Undergraduate Students section of this catalog, the School of Learning and Teaching section of this catalog, the College of Education handbook, as well as those immediately below.

Students must:

  • Maintain a 2.75 minimum GPA in all professional education and endorsement area coursework with no grade lower that a “C”; a “C-” is not acceptable.
  • Complete all required coursework and tests required for licensure before student teaching.
  • Complete field experience, required practica and student teaching with a grade of Pass.
  • Complete requirements for an edTPA. Requirements include preparation, teaching and a satisfactory evaluation.
