Dance, BA

Introduction

The dance major applies a holistic approach in preparing students for careers as creative and critical thinkers in the field of dance. Majors are encouraged to pursue an integrative capstone that embraces Pacific’s liberal arts education. Opportunities to perform, choreograph, study history and culture; and dance science, all of which combine theory and practice. Student graduates in dance go on to have careers in a variety of fields, including the performing arts, arts management, production, dance science, dance education, become somatic practitioners, and many other professions that value communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Programs that combine well with dance include anthropology, kinesiology, media arts, music, psychology, business, and education.

Technique Foundations


*The 0-credit option is only available for Dance majors and minors.
Students are encouraged to take the same dance technique courses consecutively from fall to spring each year.

Fall: DANC 205   Spring: DANC 206
Fall: DANC 221   Spring: DANC 222

Ballet


Complete two courses or 4 credits from the following:

Jazz or Contemporary


Complete two courses or 4 credits from the following:

Elective Technique at the 300 Level

Total: 32 - 44 Credits

Program Details


Program Length

Four years for a complete BA degree.  Two years for students transferring in with an AAOT degree.  Program length may vary depending upon the student’s course load and academic progress.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students that successfully complete a degree in Dance will:

  • demonstrate technical and artistic proficiency in dance technique, performance, and creative inquiry. 
  • demonstrate collaborative skills by working together as a company throughout the creative process and performance in various roles such as a director, leader, and dancer– while developing peer review skills on own and peers’ work. 
  • demonstrate knowledge of holistic anatomical approaches synthesized through the creative process and safe dance practices.
  • interpret, analyze, and critique topics and issues of dance globally, while relating them to contemporary society and communicate their analyses through multiple modes including choreography, performance, research and presentation, and community outreach. 
  • through fulfillment of a dance capstone, demonstrate the ability to conceptualize, design, develop, make artistic choices relating to the standards of the profession, and revise a large-scale creative research project that is publicly presented.  In addition, students will demonstrate proficiency in the following skills: creative inquiry, critical thinking, organizational skills, and written/oral defense of artistic choices made in relation to dance standards on given topics at an advanced undergraduate level.
