Introduction

The Chemistry minor is a subset of the major. Our mission is to enhance the intellectual and personal development of our students in an undergraduate liberal arts setting.  We specifically develop an understanding of the theoretical and experimental background necessary for both chemistry majors and non-majors to pursue careers in research, industry, education, the health professions, and other fields.  Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, discipline, and the ability to work closely with others to solve complex problems.

Upper-division Elective Courses: 8 Credits

(at least 4 credits must be CHEM 330 , CHEM 370  or CHEM 380  )

Total: 25 Credits

Program Learning Outcomes

By the end of their studies, graduating chemistry majors will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills (e.g., documentation, preparing solutions, synthesizing organic and inorganic materials, performing chemical, computational, and instrumental analyses and measurements).

  • Critically evaluate primary and secondary scientific literature sources in order to design experiments or interpret results to support or refute a hypothesis or research question.

  • Organize, synthesize, and analyze scientific ideas using appropriate chemical models from each of the fundamental areas of chemistry (analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic and physical).

  • Communicate scientific ideas using appropriate modalities and terms.

  • Practice science in a safe, ethical, and responsible manner which reflects the role of chemists in environmental stewardship and sustainability.
