Dual Languages and Cultures, BA

Introduction

The Dual Languages and Cultures major at Pacific is designed for students who wish to achieve proficiency in two languages other than English as well as strong intercultural competencies. Proficiency in several languages and cultures prepares students for a variety of careers, including teaching, health care, international business, and government service. Students pursuing the Dual Languages and Cultures major may concentrate in French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a primary language; and Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a secondary language. Students will study abroad in a country where their primary DLC language is spoken.

Admissions  

Program Length

Four years for a complete BA degree.  Two years for students transferring in with an AAOT degree.  Program length may vary depending upon the student’s course load and academic progress.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Dual Languages and Cultures major will:

  • achieve linguistic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing equivalent to ACTFL Advanced Low for the primary language and Intermediate Low for the secondary language (for a description of ACTFL proficiency levels, see https://www.actfl.org/sites/default/files/guidelines/ACTFLProficiencyGuidelines2012.pdf),
  • demonstrate a comparative understanding of cultural diversity,
  • be able to analyze at least one aspect of major historical, social, intellectual, artistic and/or linguistic trends of the two areas of specialization; and
  • leverage disciplinary knowledge to create a capstone project that demonstrates an understanding of the cultures and languages of the two areas of specialization.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students pursuing the Dual Languages and Cultures major may concentrate in Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a primary language; and Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a secondary language. The department seeks to graduate majors who:

  • achieve linguistic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing equivalent to ACTFL Advanced Low for the primary language and Intermediate Low for the secondary language (for a description of ACTFL proficiency levels, see https://www.actfl.org/sites/default/files/guidelines/ACTFLProficiencyGuidelines2012.pdf)

Primary Language (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese): 12-28 Credits


  • Complete courses numbered 101,102, 201, and 202 in the primary language     (0-16 credits)

            Note: Student could test out of this level completely

  • Complete 4 credits of upper-division coursework in the primary language at Pacific       4 credits
  • Complete 8 credits in an approved Study Abroad* (including short-term)                        8 credits

            Note: students must complete coursework (or be proficient) at the 202 level or above to be eligible for study abroad.

* If a student cannot study abroad, they may be able to substitute an equivalent experience. (Dept. Chair approval required)

 

Secondary Language (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese): 4-16 Credits


  • Complete courses numbered 101, 102, 201, and 202 in the secondary language (0-16 credits).

At least 4 credits must be taken at Pacific University in the secondary language. If a student tests directly into the upper-division level (301 or above) for their secondary language, they must take at least 4 credits of upper-division language courses at Pacific University or Study Abroad.

 

Note: International students may not use their native language to fulfill the primary or secondary language requirements of this major.
