HIST 216 - History of Modern Japan

Introduces students to the history of modern Japan, from the Meiji Restoration of 1868 to the present. Major themes and events include Japan’s development as a nation-state, its colonial empire, the Asia-Pacific War, and its “miraculous” postwar recovery and growth. Although the course ostensibly surveys the history of a single nation and society, the emphasis will be on how this history relates to broader socio-economic and political phenomena throughout the world.
