Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Minor

Introduction

The TESOL minor is intended to equip students with knowledge and skills necessary for teaching English as a second or foreign language, whether overseas or in other educational settings. Those who wish to enter a graduate degree program in TESOL will build a strong foundation in this field. This program does not lead to an endorsement in ESOL at K-12, unless students are already admitted to the undergraduate initial teaching licensure program in the School of Teaching and Learning.

Students should consult with the ESOL program coordinator to plan their course of study. A student enrolling in ESOL and EDUC courses should have at least junior standing and must complete all courses with a grade of C or better.

One of the Following:

FREN, CHIN, SPAN, GER, JAPN language course (202 or above)

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing this program will:

Understand theory and research related to linguistics and second language acquisition
Form a knowledge of cultural diversity and the impact of diversity on learning, including historical backgrounds and current legislation related to ESOL and Bilingual education policies
