Introduction

Students in the Art Minor take a sampling of studio courses at different levels of instruction along with one art history course. This twenty-credit minor complements all majors by helping students practice lateral thinking, find visual and conceptual connections, and build skills with a variety of media. These are skills that may be easily and necessarily applied to other disciplines to attain success. This minor is also an excellent way for students who have loved art to continue developing their skills for personal satisfaction and expression, or to maintain a creative lifestyle.

By successfully completing a minor in Art, students will understand and be able to apply the following artistic concepts and practices:

The Creative Process: Students will be able to use a variety of brainstorming techniques to generate a variety of novel ideas to solve problems.
Skill and Technique: Students will have sufficient mastery of one or more media to complete the technical and formal challenges necessary to communicate a concept in original artwork.
Context and Concept: Students will be able to develop ideas that are relevant and responsive to the world around them.
Communication: Students will be able to clearly communicate the content, context, and processes of their work visually, orally, and in writing.
Deliberate Practice: Students will demonstrate behaviors, such as curiosity, initiative, and persistence, through an iterative method of discovery that helps them improve their work.
