Introduction

Learn Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and immerse yourself in its varied cultures. The Spanish program pairs the classroom immersion experience with cultural experiences on campus. Students engage with Spanish-language speakers using state-of-the-art technology in the Center for Languages and International Collaboration. Students who minor in Spanish are encouraged (but not required) to study abroad for one semester in Spain or Latin America, or to participate in short-term travel courses to Spain, Costa Rica or the Galapagos Islands.

A. 4-5 credits of experiential coursework from the following list:

SPAN 325 - Mexican-American Cultural Exploration 4 credit(s)
SA 476 (Study Abroad in a Spanish-speaking country)
Any travel course to a Spanish-speaking country (taught in Spanish or in English)
Any 4 credits of upper-division Spanish + 1 credit of CIV 110 (Civic engagement project related to Spanish-speaking world).
Additional 8 credits of upper-division Spanish at Pacific.

B. 8 upper-division credits from SA courses taught in Spanish in Spanish speaking country

Notes:

Students who wish to minor in Spanish and enter the sequence at the 300-level will complete a minimum of 16 credits from upper-division offerings. A maximum of 8 credits are allowed from Study Abroad.

Students completing the minor in Spanish will:

achieve linguistic proficiency in Spanish for listening, speaking, reading and writing equivalent to ACTFL* Intermediate Mid,
demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences, reflect on their own culture, and explain differences between their own culture and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
