Students entering the Clinical Psychology PhD program without a master’s degree must complete requirements for the master of science (MS) in clinical psychology en route to the PhD. The MS and PhD degrees typically can be completed in five years of full-time study (four years in residence devoted to coursework, research, and practicum, and one year away on doctoral internship). The MS in Clinical Psychology is not a terminal degree program.

Degree Requirements

Students must be enrolled in the PhD Program in Clinical Psychology and must meet all prerequisite course requirements that were in effect at the time of initial enrollment. The MS is earned while studying for the PhD degree and is not designed as a stand-alone program. Students interested in completing their education with a master’s degree should apply to the Applied Clinical Psychology Master’s program.

The following courses are required for the MS degree. Students must earn a minimum of 48 credits while in good standing. Typically, they will comprise the first two years of the PhD program curriculum.
