Introduction
Gain a solid academic foundation built upon studies in music theory and analysis, music history and performance opportunities in both classical and jazz idioms with a bachelor of arts in music.
Program Length
Four years for a complete BA degree. Two years for students transferring in with an AAOT degree. Program length may vary depending upon the student’s course load and academic progress.
Program Learning Outcomes
By successfully completing a major in Music, Instrumental Performance, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of music theory and history.
- Demonstrate proficiency on a chosen instrument/voice.
- Demonstrate a proficiency in general musicianship, aural skills and sight-reading.
- Creatively explore and research a topic related to a specific area of musical interest such as (but not limited to)- music history, composition, world music and culture, sociology and aesthetics of music.
- Produce a thesis presentation representing specialized research in a chosen area of musical inquiry.

Music Core Courses: Required for all Bachelor of Arts in Music majors
Ensembles: 8 semesters
Large ensemble appropriate to the student’s instrument or voice each semester in residence; may be taken for 0 or 1 credit. Students with junior standing or above may register at the 300-level for upper-division credit.
Applied Music: 8 Credits
Private instruction with a Pacific University instructor every semester in residence
Piano: 2 Credits
(and pass the Piano Proficiency Test)
Recital Attendance: 0 Credits
Total: 34-42 Credits
* Waived for students who pass the Piano Proficiency Test without enrolling in these courses
Music History: 4 Credits
