Kinesiology

The mission of the Kinesiology program is to contribute to the generation, dissemination and application of knowledge related to human movement in multiple contexts. Students and faculty are actively engaged in each area. While a health-science context is emphasized, the curriculum enables students to understand movement by integrating multiple scientific perspectives so as to be successful in a variety of arenas (e.g., employment in the fitness/exercise field, graduate study in professional or academic disciplines).

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the Kinesiology major will:

Apply fundamental human movement principles, from both natural and social science perspectives, to a variety of contexts and populations;
Demonstrate an applied understanding of the form and function of the human body;
Critically evaluate human movement research in order to design and implement activities to confirm and/or generate disciplinary knowledge;
Use qualitative and quantitative reasoning and evidence, synthesizing information from a variety of origins to methodically and systematically solve problems and develop interventions in the human movement domain;
Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with lay and professional audiences;
Demonstrate appropriate levels of transferable independence and judgement necessary that will enhance success in future employment or schooling.

All students will complete the following coursework to complete a Kinesiology major.

Outdoor Leadership

Faculty

The outdoor leadership program is designed to prepare students for work in the growing outdoor industry, or any field that requires dynamic leadership, risk management, and decision making skills to solve complex challenges within a team. The outdoor adventure industry generates $889 billion in annual consumer spending in the United States, and there are more than 7 million American jobs, according to the Outdoor Industry Association. Oregon alone has $5.1 billion in outdoor industry wages and over 170,000 direct jobs.

Program Learning Outcomes

By completing a major in outdoor leadership, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a level of technical mastery in specific outdoor adventure disciplines in order to lead participants in a responsible and ethical manner.
Evaluate leadership, facilitation, and risk management theories and apply these to real world settings that create challenging and transformational outdoor adventure experiences.
Investigate the dynamic relationship between outdoor adventure recreation and the natural environment, and its practical application to humanity.
Develop an awareness of systemic oppression and the impact of the intersectionality of race, class, gender, and place in outdoor adventure experiences.

Sport Leadership & Management

Faculty

Earning a bachelor of arts (BA) in sport leadership & management at Pacific University will challenge you to explore the dynamic world of sport and recreation from a multi-disciplinary lens. You will gain a foundation of knowledge and skills necessary to make ethical, data-driven, financial, and legal decisions to lead successful sport programs and organizations while being given the opportunity to specialize in coursework and experiences that will result in a unique preparation for your dream job.

Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of theories and skills for effective leadership and professional success
Apply critical thinking and reasoning skills to improve sporting/recreational opportunities and enhance competence for diverse populations
Examine and analyze ethical and moral issues related to sport management and leadership
Demonstrate effective communication, orally and in writing, with lay and professional audiences
Demonstrate appropriate levels of independence, judgement, and professionalism in management and leadership environments
