ARTHI 342 - Islamic Art and Architecture 4 credit(s) This course provides students with a general introduction of Islamic art and architecture from the 7th through the 18th century. It examines selected characteristic works of art and architecture from the formative periods to the later periods with distinctive regional expressions. The discussion will cover a variety of media and techniques including architecture, architectural decoration, metal work, ceramics, and the arts of the book, both from the religious and secular realms. Students will explore the meaning and functions of art created within specific religious, social, political, historical, and artistic contexts in order to understand the significance of the visual culture in the Islamic context. Core Requirement(s): Counts toward core requirements: International Perspectives and Historical Context. Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing or above (30 or more completed credits).
