LTNX 201 - Intro to Latinx Studies 4 credit(s) Introduces the making of the Latinx identity in the United States. As an introductory course in the interdisciplinary field of Latinx Studies, this course engages with a number of fields of study including history, anthropology, Latin American literature and culture, women and gender studies, language and linguistics, among others. Central to our framework of study is the understanding that the United States emerges as a nation vis-vis practices of settler colonialism. The course includes an analysis of the historical and political relationship between Latin America and the United States, immigration policies of the United States, the Chicano Movement, and the struggle for civil and human rights for this ethnic group. Students will examine past and present issues relevant to the Latinx experience and identity: immigration, education, class, gender, sexuality, discrimination, politics, biculturalism, language, customs, and cultural production.
