HIST 337 - Gender and Sexuality in Modern Japan 4 credit(s) Explores the history of gender and sexuality in Japan from the 19th century to the present. Major themes include: modernity and Westernization; family structures and domesticity; feminisms; eugenics, contraception, and abortion; nationalism, pronatalism, and Total Mobilization; sex work and commodified intimacy; queer and trans movements; and Western media coverage of weird Japan. This course also introduces students to the more advanced tools of a historian, including utilizing primary and secondary sources in paper-writing, historiography, and research skills.
