Provides an introduction to the history of Indigenous peoples and modern tribal states in the Pacific Northwest, with special attention to issues of historical authority, sources and voice. Major themes include: Indigenous identities and lifeways pre-1830; the impact of Old World diseases on Indigenous populations; the arrival of Euro-American settlers and the taking of Indigenous lands; violence, wars and treaties in the 1840s-1870s; the reservation system; the creation and impacts of boarding schools; citizenship and civil rights of Indigenous peoples; the fragmentation of reservation lands and tribal sovereignty, 1880s-1950s; and developments of modern tribal nations and cultures, 1960s to present.
