IS 222 - Introduction to East Asian Studies 4 credit(s) Provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of East Asia. Through an examination of fiction, film, memoirs, historical documents, and scholarly writings, we will examine East Asia’s place in the modern world. We will begin with an examination of the shared cultural and philosophical foundations-i.e. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism-that make East Asia a coherent region. We will focus on the eighteenth through twenty-first centuries, and particularly how various forms of media shed light on East Asian modernity. Also listed as HUM 222 .
